For thirty years Kuskin reviewed children's literature for The New York Times Book Review, and additionally, contributed essays and reviews to many publications including The Saturday Review, The State of the Language, University of California Press, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Village Voice, The Horn Book Magazine, Horizon Magazine, Scholastic, House and Garden, Parents, Choice and more.

Her work as a reviewer was an important part of her broader career in children's literature, demonstrating her undeniable knowledge and critical understanding of the field.
